I had a moment of creativity, which spawned the idea for the new welcome page. The old flash movie was fun, but it was getting kind of stale. Besides, the text in it was out of date and I no longer have the .fla file to edit :(
A while back I had started to update my entire web site to conform to the latest HTML 4.01 Strict & CSS standards. Well that was fun and all, and I got about 30-40% of the pages done. However, after much rewriting of the code to eliminate deprecated tags, frames, tables, reduce javascript, etc. I decided it just might be easier to start fresh.
And so the journey begins...
Yes, definitely easier to do this from scratch. I've created some nice infrastructure to promote separation of content & presentation. As a result, I've got almost no redundant code, and a consistent theme throughout the site, but still have flexibility! How is this possible!?
So here I am working on the new site. It's been about 5 years since the last major overhaul, so it's about time! Development is coming along nicely, but is far from complete. Of course, by time you read this, it's gone into production.
Haven't worked on the site for a few weeks, time to squeeze in a few hours.
Somehow I've managed to not put any time into building my new site for almost 3 months!
Lets see...October is a blur, November was spent setting up the new web server & then moving it to a new datacenter. December involved a vacation, and then the holiday season. January was just very busy at work, plus a small trip out of town.
Now to get this thing closer to release, because it's making the old site look really bad.
Agonized over the navigation setup, finally got that figured out. Then agonized over the navigation styling, and now its at a workable stage. Part of the change was to toss the fancy new welcome page with the flash intro mentioned back on 2004-09-10.
Got some more of the content entered, and freshened it up along the way. Hopefully version 5.0 of the site will be ready to roll out by the end of this month!
Quite a bit more content added, lots of styles unified/condensed, more consistency on the site. Good stuff!
I finally decided to eliminate the custom right-click menu & the silly mouse-click-crossbow-effect. It's too bad many of you visitors will never see these entertaining, yet horrible bells & whistles.
The Web Hosting pages are all complete now, excluding the order form on the secure site (still using old one for now).
Version 5.0 alpha of the web site has been released! A few more things to work out (namely DCHoH & DCGS) until it's officially 5.0.
Version 5.0 is official. It's really 5.0 alpha because the HoH is going to take a while to convert.
Version 5.1 is out. This includes a few small changes, but more importantly the House of Hacks has been migrated!
Been a while since I updated the site, made a few changes that probably aren't even noticeable. DCGS is now gone since there was only one item left, and I just tossed it in the dumpster a while back!
